Many plants only discover after installing a laser cutter that problems such as incomplete cuts, dross and rough cut faces do not necessarily come from the laser or the process parameters but from the air. Laser cutting needs a continuous, steady flow of assist gas into the cutting zone, and any pressure fluctuation shows up immediately in cut quality — especially when cutting medium and thick plate or running continuous batches, where an unstable air supply is almost the same as a rising reject rate.
General workshop compressors often suffer a pressure collapse the moment cutting starts or stops, or let network pressure swing up and down through load/unload control. The ESSENCE FASM-16/FASM-16F PM VSD screw air compressor for laser cutting is made for this duty. It reaches a working pressure of 1.6 MPa, covers 0.3-3.80 m³/min of air delivery and 7.5-37 kW of power, and uses PM VSD starting with coaxial direct drive, with everything from the drive method to the structure built around one thing: a stable air supply.
Laser cutting's demands on the air supply come down to three points: high enough pressure, steady enough flow, and no interruption.
High enough pressure, because some materials and thicknesses need higher assist gas pressure to blow the molten material away effectively; steady enough flow, because once the cutting head is short of pressure both cutting speed and quality drop; and no interruption, because a laser cutter often runs for hours at a time, and any drop in pressure can ruin a section of the cut.
Ordinary compressors switch frequently between start/stop and load/unload, causing large pressure fluctuations; fixed-speed models keep running at full speed even at low load, which is neither economical nor stable. A dedicated model exists to resolve exactly these conflicts.
The FASM-16/FASM-16F uses PM VSD starting. The point of variable speed is not just energy saving but pressure stability.
Traditional fixed-speed machines adjust air volume by loading and unloading: they unload at the set pressure and load again when pressure falls, so network pressure keeps swinging back and forth within a band. A VSD machine instead matches air demand by continuously adjusting motor speed, changing smoothly with demand so pressure fluctuation is sharply reduced. For a pressure-sensitive process like laser cutting, this matters more than energy saving alone.
At the same time, the soft-start behaviour of PM VSD reduces the impact on the grid and the machinery and lowers starting current.
The parameters specify coaxial direct drive. The motor connects directly to the airend, removing belts and pulleys and the losses between them; drive efficiency is higher, and one maintenance point that needs routine checking, tensioning and replacement is eliminated.
It is matched with an aftercooler whose outlet temperature is held at ≤ ambient temperature + 15°C. With good control of discharge temperature, the downstream refrigerated dryer and filters carry a lighter load and the whole air system is more stable.
The FASM-16/FASM-16F offers a full-feature configuration with a pressure dew point as low as 2-10°C. A low dew point means the water vapour content of the compressed air is kept very low: pipes are less likely to collect water, nozzles are less likely to clog, and the cutting head lens is less likely to fog up or be contaminated. For a precision process like laser cutting, dry assist gas is an important part of ensuring cut quality.

The competitiveness of laser cutting ultimately shows in cutting speed and cut quality, and neither is possible without a stable air supply. The ESSENCE FASM-16/FASM-16F brings together 1.6 MPa high pressure, PM VSD pressure stability, coaxial direct drive and low-dew-point drying to minimise the uncertainty in this air link. As a brand of Fusheng Group, ESSENCE draws on the group's R&D and service system, giving selection and after-sales service a stronger footing.
