Freya FRV PM VSD Screw Air Compressor: On-Demand Air

The core logic of PM VSD is to make the compressor's air output follow the air demand. A fixed-speed machine adjusts by loading and unloading, so when demand is low the motor still runs at full speed and the excess air is blown off; PM VSD instead varies speed continuously with demand, producing only as much as is used. The FRV Series under the Freya brand is a PM VSD screw air compressor designed around exactly this logic.

From Load/Unload to On-Demand Air

The FRV uses PM VSD starting, with speed adjusted continuously to air demand: when demand is low, speed drops, avoiding the energy waste of running unloaded; when demand is high, speed rises, replenishing air in time and maintaining pipe network pressure. Continuous adjustment markedly reduces pressure fluctuation, helping downstream equipment work steadily; VSD soft starting also reduces the impact of starting current on the grid and the machinery. The more pronounced the fluctuation in demand, the more this approach pays off.

Wide Pressure Range and Coaxial Direct Drive

The FRV covers a working pressure of 0.7–1.25 MPa, with the same model offering different air delivery at four pressure ratings: the higher the pressure set, the smaller the air output, so selection should use the actual working pressure. The drive is coaxial direct drive, with the motor connected directly to the airend, reducing intermediate transmission and eliminating the routine maintenance of belt tensioning and replacement. The aftercooler outlet temperature is held at ≤ ambient temperature + 15 °C, helping to lighten the load on downstream refrigerated dryers and filters.

Selection Points

First determine the usual working pressure, then match the air delivery at that pressure;
Give priority to VSD where demand fluctuates greatly, and evaluate comprehensively where the load is constant and full over the long term;
Configure air treatment according to the process requirements for dew point and dust content;
When a VSD model runs at low load for long periods, still follow the manual for cooling and lubrication.
